How to set up an internet business? (step 4-5)

How to set up an internet business? (step 1-3)

Step 4: Register domain name(s)

Now you need to register a domain name for each of your product/service to sell online. If your products/service are closely related and can be put into one big general category, you can need one domain name; otherwise, it is better to have different domain names for different products/service if they are not closely related to each other.

Your domain name should reflect the products/service you are going to sell. You can also use your own personal name, current business name, keywords you find via Wordtracker, or something created as your domain name.

If you just make up some words or phrases as your domain name, keep it simple, short, easy to pronounce, remember and spell. You can also use only letters, numbers, and hyphens in your domain name, without spaces or other symbols.

If your first choice isn't available, try rearranging the word order, adding hyphens, or using abbreviations or locations to come up with a unique alternative.

You can register your domain name through the following resources, which provide good services and reasonable prices. I have personally used both of them and have good experience so far.

  • GoDaddy.com $6.99

  • Yahoo.com $1.99 (the 1st year)

  • Godaddy.com    $6.99
I registered 2 domain names via GoDaddy.com. You can get a long list of FREE extras with EVERY domain, including FREE blog, FREE hosting with website builder, your own email, domain forwarding & masking, 100-pack email forwarding, total DNS control, change of registration, domain locking, and FREE starter page and parked page.

You can also register your domain name at $1.99* with each and every new, non-domain product you buy -- no quantity limit!

PLUS, you get Personalized Email ($9.99/yr value!), FREE hosting, blog and much more - a $96 value**! ($1.99 reflected in your shopping cart at checkout.)

Private Registrations are only $6.99! ** or FREE when you register five or more domains!

    * Plus ICANN fee of 20 cents per domain name year. Certain TLD's only.
**Private Registration will renew at the regular renewal rate

    Yahoo.com $1.99    (the 1st year)
I registered several domain names through Yahoo’s $1.99/1st yr. domains program and pretty happy with it so far. It provides 24-hour Toll-Free customer service, an easy-to-use control panel to set up and manage your domain, private domain registration (for an extra $9 per year), and starter web page (until you're ready to upgrade to a full web site), domain locking, domain forwarding, complete domain (DNS) control, and email forwarding.

Step 5: Find a website hosting company

It is critical to find a GOOD website hosting company to host your domain name. You should look for the best combination of quality and price, not just the lowest price.

    Why this is so important?

Because poor-quality hosting companies will make you cry: your website can be slow or even down, connection can fail, sending/receiving emails may have errors, database can lose, security/hacking issues, customer service makes you mad, and all kinds of unimaginable mischievous problems.

The best way to find a good website hosting company is to check with someone who remains as a company’s client for a long time and listen to his/her suggestions.

Generally speaking, there are 2 types of hosting companies available in the market:

Type 1: Whole Package Hosting Company
    Type 2: Pure Hosting Company

Type 1: Whole Package Hosting Company

A whole package hosting company not only hosts your domain names, but also provides a bundle of other features: domain registration, pre-designed templates/themes, website builder, hosted shopping cart service, marketing, security and so on.

In many cases, when you sign up an E-commerce account (normally called “Merchant Solution” or “E-Commerce Solution”) with a hosted service provider (e.g. ProStores, Yahoo!, and GoDaddy.com) , the hosting service is automatically included.

This type of hosting company is good for users who know little about website building, shopping cart software, or don’t want to get involved with coding. The pre-designed templates/themes, website builder tools and hosted shopping cart service provide people such convenience.

    Type 2: Pure Hosting Company

Pure hosting company normally only provides domain registration and hosting services. They provide bigger storage, lower prices, more programming features, and more technical freedom to their clients, therefore they are favorite choices of computer programmers, IT developers, and people who want to have more control about their websites.

I have been using dreamhost.com, an employee-owned company, to host all my websites since January 2007. So far I am very satisfied with their service and price. I am pretty confident this is one of the best website hosting companies. Can you image to pay only $7.95/month* for a hosting account which includes:

  • 145.6 GB storage at signup, 1456 TB monthly bandwidth at signup

  • Unlimited MySQL databases

  • 1 FREE domain registration, FREE domain WHOIS privacy

  • FREE SSL secure server (req. Unique IP) and enhanced web security

  • Unlimited domains hosted, sub-domains hosted, unlimited domains forwarded/mirrored, custom DNS

  • 3000 Email accounts (POP/IMAP), 75 Shell/FTP Users

  • 97 days money-back guarantee, 24/7 technical support (E-mail)

  • And a lot of more FREE features

  • *$7.95/month with a two year pre-payment

Since currently I have 5 online stores, unlimited domain hosted and unlimited MySQL databases are crucial for me to lower the costs. Other feature I like very much include: 1 FREE domain registration, unlimited sub-domains hosted, and huge storage of 145.6 GB.

Their customer service is quite timely and friendly. For several times, I emailed my inquiries to them at Saturday and Sundays, and got their replies within one hour.

Your can repeat the above-mentioned step in “Change MX Records” if you prefer. Don’t forget to lock your domain name to ensure that no one can modify your name servers without your permission.
